Questions

How does an inflation calculator work?
It compares the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for two dates. CPI tracks what a fixed basket of goods and services costs. If CPI is 10 times higher today than in some year, $1 from that year buys what $10 buys now. We use the official CPI-U from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, monthly back to January 1913.
What is the current inflation rate?
Prices in August 2026 were 3.4% higher than a year earlier, based on CPI-U. The full-year rate for 2025 was 2.6%.
How much is $100 from 1970 worth today?
$863.35 in August 2026 dollars. Prices are about 8.6 times what they were in 1970.
Should I pick a month or the whole year?
Use a month when you know it, such as the month you were paid a salary or bought a house. Whole year uses the annual average CPI, which is what most published "in today's dollars" figures use.
Why is my result different from another calculator?
Calculators differ in which month they call "today", whether they use annual averages or a single month, and whether they use CPI-U or another index. We show which dates we used under every answer.
How often is the data updated?
Every month, shortly after the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases new CPI figures (usually mid-month for the month before).
